About the International Council of Kinetography Laban

Founded in England in 1959, the International Council of Kinetography Laban is a non-profit international association of exponents of Kinetography Laban/Labanotation. Membership is open to anyone interested in the research, development and practice of movement/dance notation. ICKL has about a hundred members and fellows from more than twenty countries.

Originated by Rudolf Laban and published in 1928, the system was further developed by Albrecht Knust, Sigurd Leeder and Ann Hutchinson Guest.

ICKL provides a biennial forum for the presentation, discussion and implementation of research and development of this system of movement/dance notation, and its application to the many areas of movement/dance utilizing new technologies.

This system is one of the most universally used systems of movement notation for the documentation of, education about, and research on, human movement.

The aims of ICKL are to promote the use of the system; to increase research for its development and applications; to act as a deciding body with regard to the orthography and principles of the system; to support experimental projects in related areas; to encourage information exchange among centers and individuals using the system.

Its activities include the publication of conference proceedings, bibliographies and indexes, and the organization of the biennial conferences.
