American Jazz Dance Seminar

Organised by the Celestar Studio of Performing Arts (CSOPA), this seminar will explore the origins of American Jazz Dance and the evolution of current jazz styles.

Find out what jazz dance is, where it originated, why America and what it encompasses.

TARI 2002

The Akademi Seni Kebangsaan and Ministry of Culture, Arts and Tourism are pleased to announce the 5th International Dance Festival, TARI 2002 – celebrating Asian Dance!

This year the festival will take on a new look as it tours to Penang, Ipoh and Kuantan before making a final performance in Kuala Lumpur. In the meantime, various local dance companies will perform in Kuala Lumpur. In addition, local and international teachers will conduct workshops.

Ballet Repertoire Workshop

The renowned ballerina, Tan Yuan Yuan, from the San Francisco Ballet Company will conduct two workshops in which she will teach solo classical variations from ballets such as Giselle, Sleeping Beauty and Swan Lake.

Tan Yuan Yuan trained first at the prestigious Shanghai Dance School and later at the John Cranko School in Germany.

She joined the San Francisco Ballet Company in 1994 as a soloist, becoming a principal dancer in 1997.

She has won numerous medals at various International Ballet Competitions.

Roundtable Dialogue

“Management of Contemporary Dance Around Southeast Asia”

Organised by Tasema Productions with support from Arts Network Asia, this two-day roundtable dialogue involves the coming together of select individuals from various Southeast Asian capitals to discuss ways in which the management of contemporary dance in Southeast Asia can be improved upon.

“Movement Investigation” Workshop

Organised by MyDance Alliance and conducted by Joyce Lim, this ‘movement investigation’ workshop has 4 main components:

· Warm up using Yang style Tai Chi Chuan concentrating on basic concepts such as slowness, precision, relaxation, breathing, weight distribution and focus
· Image Based Work as a means of improvisation and movement investigation. The rational or conscious mind will be ‘shut down’ allowing the body and imagination free expression in movement and imagery
· The movements generated will be crafted into solo phrases
· Negative Space (time permitting) is a means of training the eyes and body to look for unfilled/unoccupied spaces and to explore partnering

Joyce Lim Shuan Li is a Malaysian who has lived and worked in the US for the last 12 years. Since 1998 her work has focused on contemporary issues and aesthetics of SEAsia.

Her choreographies and videos have been presented internationally at venues ranging from the Cultural Center of the Philippines, Gedung Kesenian Jakarta, and the Judson Church and Danspace Project at St Marks Church, New York.

Pallavi

As part of The Artists’ Space Season 2002, Ramli Ibrahim & the Sutra Dancers will perform Pallavi.

Pallavi is both a dance genre within Odissi, an Indian Classical Dance style from Orissa, and a way of rendering a particular music refrain so that every shade and nuance possible within the chosen dance/music phrase is brought out.

Pallavis are characterised by sculpturesque poses and intricate patterns of feet movement.

Workshops By Five Arts Centre

Over the month of October, the Five Arts Center will hold a series of workshops – Performance Workshops for Adults and Creative Workshops for Young People.

1) Performance Workshops for Adults

This workshop will introduce new and aspiring performers to training techniques in acting, movement and voice, and will include exciting activities such as theatre games and improvisation, stage combat and freeing the participants’ voices!

The workshops will be led by pioneering dancer/choreographer and Five Arts Centre founder member, Marion D’Cruz; Mark Teh and Kubhaer T. Jethwani from exciting youth theatre group Akshen; and Lim Chung Wei, Universiti Sains Malaysia graduate in Theatre and Drama who has worked extensively with groundbreaking director Janet Pillai in Penang.

Dates: every Saturday (5th, 12th, 19th and 26th) of October 2002

2) Creative Workshops for Young People

This workshop for young people aged 12-17 years will introduce participants to creative expression through improvisation, role-play, theatre games and problem-solving techniques.

The programme will be conducted by actress Jerrica Lai, who has worked extensively with young people in many projects, including Five Arts Centre’s Teater Muda programme, as well as teaching children’s theatre at The Actors Studio, Girl’s Shelter in Taman OUG and the Kiwanis Foundation.

Dance Of The Weave

As part of The Artists’ Space Season 2002, celebrated classical dancer Zaridah Abdul Malik will perform Dance of the Weave with her dancers while accompanied by cellist, Pak Yosbar.

Her muse (as indicated by the title) is the songket fabric woven by Habibah Haji Zikri, which she feels, reveals and glorifies the gracious female psyche.

‘Woman Alone’ is based on Sita of the Ramayana who is abducted by the demon Ravana. She pines for her beloved but when help does not come, she uses her own resources to secure her freedom.

‘Processions, Weavers, Initiation and Pure Dance’ fuses classical styles with contemporary dance to capture the eternal joy and serenity inspired the songket pieces.

Brahmacakra

Sutra Dance Theatre presents a Bharata Natyam performance, Brahmacakra (The Magic Circle), featuring Shangita, Nada, Guna and Apsara.

In this performance the dancers showcase their own evolution and renewed interpretation of traditional repertoires while at the same time upholding the distinctive Kalakshetra stamp.

They will be accompanied by live music, led by distinguished vocalist Padma Subramaniam with Jaya Shekar on nattuvangam.
