Four Seasons

Kre Art Dance Theater, a Kajang-based teaching and performing dance organisation directed by Loo Poh Choo, is holding a dance concert involving 100 of its students ranging in age from 3 to 25 years old.

The concert is an opportunity for the students to learn and perform different styles of dance, appreciate variety in music and work together as a team.

Malam Piring

An evening of plate dances from Pahang, Negeri Sembilan and other states has been organised by Junainah M. Lojong and other tutors of the Dance Program at the Akademi Seni Kebangsaan.

Originally from Indonesia, these dances have now become a part of Malaysian traditional dance, practiced by people of Minang descent and numerous others resulting in many versions.

In The Imperial Garden

Dama Orchestra’s musical production of In the Imperial Garden will feature the inimitable Lee Swee Keong of Nyoba & Dancers in the role of Evil.

Combining music and songs with drama, dance and theatrics, the production dramatises the triumph of Good over Evil in the Kingdom Earth.

Dance4Charity Workshop / Performance

Shirena Hamzah is organising a seven-day dance workshop to be held 7-13 September 2002 at Desa Sri Hartamas.

Jay T Jenkins and Vicki Fischer, instructors from STEPS on Broadway, New York, will conduct the workshop. Both have worked with various dance companies across the United States, and also on Music Videos for artists such as Prince, Salt n Pepa and Chaka Khan.

At the end of the workshop, there will be a performance at the Securities Commission Auditorium. This will be a charity event and the proceeds will go to the Malaysian AIDS Foundation.

Aside from recruiting students for the workshop, we are also inviting schools to send in one or two numbers to be staged on the charity night.

Qing Dance Performance 2002

Qing by the Selangor & Kuala Lumpur Kwang Tung Association Dance Troupe is a performance based on an abstraction of the elements of nature such as wind, land, water and mountain. A range of cultural and artistic works such as poetry, music and Chinese landscape paintings have been incorporated into the performance.

The programme is made up of several pieces, each choreographed by one of the senior dancers/teachers at the Kwang Tung Association – Land Search (Michelle Yong), Wind Movements (Kenny Low), Water Ripples (Kenzo de Tuan), Autumn Leaves (Cheong Lin Poo – Artistic Director) and Earth Tracks (Amy Len).

Global Dance 2002 – Aesthetics of Diversity

There are two parts to Global Dance 2002.

The first part, 23 – 29 August, is the World Dance Alliance Festival, which will comprise performances, workshops and conferences. Held in Dusseldorf, the festival will offer audiences a truly global perspective, not only through invited artists and dance experts from diverse cultural regions, but by also incorporating different aesthetic value systems. The festival aims to present the ever-changing perspective of contemporary dance.

The second part of Global Dance 2002, 28 – 31 August, will be the International Dance Fair (Internationale Tanzmesse NRW). 1000 sqm of exhibition space will be used by exhibitors such as companies, dancers, choreographers, organisations, schools and institutions, scholars, festival directors, cultural commissioners, arts administrators and so forth from places as diverse as Austria, Brazil, Canada, Croatia, France, Israel, Korea, Luxembourg, Mexico, Russia, USA and many, many more.

(Of note – Malaysia’s own Kuala Lumpur Dance Theatre, directed by Mrs. Lee Lee Lan, will perform in the festival)

Lokanatha: Lords of the World

Ramli Ibrahim will feature in Lokanatha: Lords of the World as part of Sutra Dance Theatre’s ‘Under the Stars Series’.

This bharatanatyam performance showcases part of the traditional repertoire on Shiva and Vishnu, and will be accompanied by live carnatic music led by Jeya Sekhar.

Waltzes Of The World

The Dance Society of Malaysia is holding a charity dinner and dance to raise funds. This is to enable it to continue its work in supporting and promoting local ballet talent, and providing a platform for performances by talented dancers. To date the society has organised yearly ballet competitions, several Festivals of Dance and a full-length ballet entitled The Slave Princess.

Waltzes of the World is a dinner and dance event to be held in the Shangri-la Hotel Ballroom and will feature Viennese Waltzes to music by Johann Strauss, waltzes from ballet classics by students from various ballet schools, operatic music on the piano and a jewellery show cum auction by Juita Gems.
