Jazz & Butoh

Dance with Kazutoki Umezu is a rare collaboration between Jazz saxophonist, Kazutoki Umezu, and Butoh dancer, Koji Motoki. They will be joined by percussionist/drummer, Lewis Pragasam.

Butoh is a unique form of dance with high theatrical art appeal in Japan and abroad. Not only is it rarely seen in Malaysia, but its combination with jazz truly rare indeed. Umezu’s and Motoki’s collaboration has been well received in Russia, Okinawa and other places both in and out of Japan.

Date: Thursday (24 October 2002)
Time: 8.30pm
Venue: Mini Auditorium, MTC, Jalan Ampang
Admission: by donation (min RM30)

Contact: Mr Toru Noshi at 03-2142 2253 (tel), 03-2142 2254 (fax) or email nishino@ppp.nasionet.net

————————–

Kazutoki Umezu has been an influential saxophone and clarinet player in the Japanese music scene throughout the 70s, 80s and 90s. He has exploited new music fields such as ‘rock saxophone’. He has performed in Europe, England, Germany, France, Africa and more recently, held a wildly successful jazz concert at Twelve SI in Kuala Lumpur.

Koji Motoki gained popularity through his new way of Butoh dance. He expresses emotions and experiences through movements taken from walking, running, working and dancing, and responds to the sounds resonating from different musicians.

The artists are part of Ranganiketan, a centre for Manipuri Arts and Culture, which promotes the classical Indian culture in the form of performing arts with special focus on Manipuri dance, Nata-Sankirtan, martial arts and tribal dances of North-Eastern India. They are some of the finest and most accomplished artists of Manipur and have performed both at home and abroad winning great acclaim and medals of honor. At present they are on their way back from participating in the Festival of India in Indonesia.

Manipuris inherited a martial arts heritage from their forefathers who had to defend their country against neighbouring giants. Thus Manipuris have developed and mastered highly sophisticated forms of martial arts from very ancient times. Of various forms of Manipuri Thang Ta – sword fight, spear fight and wrestling are quite prominent. Like the silat of the Malays, the forms of self-defense of Manipur have become a kind of dance on stage. They have now been adapted into breath-taking, graceful, elegant and exciting martial arts performances perfect for the modern stage.
