CALL FOR APPLICATIONS FROM EMERGING SOUTHEAST ASIAN CHOREOGRAPHERS

Emerging contemporary dance choreographers from Southeast Asia are invited to apply to attend an international facilitated choreographic laboratory embedded in the George Town Festival @georgetownfestival , in George Town, Penang, Malaysia, from 16 to 27 July 2024.

Energize your choreographic practice, connect with exciting peers from your region, and explore new artistic approaches from our renowned facilitator, Taiwanese choreographer Hsiao-Mei Ho.

14 selected choreographers will live, work and explore together, with guidance from our international facilitator, Taiwanese choreographer Hsiao-Mei Ho. The program will consist of 10 work days with 2 days of excursions to arts spaces in George Town. Work days will take place in Hin Bus Depot, a contemporary arts space in George Town, and will consist of sessions exploring choreographic methods, analysis and movement techniques led by Hsaio-Mei Ho and the participants themselves. Other activities include live performance viewing, informal socialising and discussions, and networking events.
The program will conclude on 27 July with 2 studio showings of works developed during the Choreolab, sharing the creative process and artistic development with the audience. These studio showings will be part of the performance program of George Town Festival.

The project will provide accommodation, meals and all activities in George Town, Penang. Selected participants must organise their own travel/airfare to Penang.

𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐛𝐨𝐱 𝐂𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐬

Fedrick Mujang Labani is a graduate student of Diploma in Dance and a candidate of the Bachelor Degree of Performing Arts (Dance) with Honors from the Sultan Idris Education University, Tanjung
Malim. His dance journey began in primary school, and subsequently at his secondary school (SeSSMS)
where he was also involved in many dance activities.
During his time studying in the Faculty of Music in Performing Arts, he has been involved in various productions and worked with many scholars and choreographers such as Prof. Dr. Md Anis Md Nor, Fauzi Amiruddin, and many others. Besides performing, he is also proactively teaching, conducting dance workshops, and choreographed dances in Kuala Lumpur and Tanjung Malim. His traditional Ngajat Iban choreography, “Ngajat Nanga Jela” for MY Dance Festival ‘23 at PJPAC won best choreography. Fedrick believes that “When we dance, our main purpose should not be about getting to a certain place on the floor. It is to enjoy each step along the way”.

Nur Yasmin Zulaikha has been actively involved in performing art as a dancer since primary school. She is a graduate student of Diploma in Dance and a candidate of the Bachelor Degree of Performing Art (Dance) with Honors from the Sultan Idris Education University, Tanjung Malim.
She has participated in performances and dance competitions such as Santapan Diraja in a Conjunction of 100 years UPSI, Folklore Dance Festival 2014, Berjaya TeenStar Challenge 2018 and many other performances throughout being a dancer. She believes that “dance has served as a means of communication, storytelling, and social interaction. From traditional folk dances to contemporary
choreography, the art of dance reflects the rich tapestry of human experiences, emotions, and creativity.”

This series of Dancebox features 7 choreographers, they are Fione Chia (New Gen Dance Company), Vicky Yap (Pixie Star RG & Dance Academy), Zainadance Zidane & Sera Nina Sumbin, Fedrick Mujang & Nur Yasmin Zulaikha (UPSI), Raziman Sarbini (Taylors University), Aramy Rasyid & Ethel Deidre, and Mohammad Adib (ASWARA).
