Malaysian Choreographers

In alphabetical order, this is a listing of Malaysian choreographers who have participated in the voluntary survey conducted by MyDance Alliance from August to September 2021.  The survey is targeted at Malaysian choreographers who have presented at least 5 choreographies from 2010 to 2021 and are active in the local or international dance scene. Due to the limited data collection time and its voluntary basis, the survey does not cover all the choreographers in Malaysia.

Abdul Hamid bin Chan

AKA Hamid Chan. Editor Journal Jurai Sembah: ( e-ISSN 2716-5523) Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI). Member ICTM – ICTM Study Group on Performing Arts of Southeast Asia. Abdul Hamid Chan holds a Diploma in Dance from National Arts Academy (now National Academy of Arts, Culture, and Heritage – ASWARA), a Bachelors Degree in Performing Arts (Drama), and a Master of Arts (Performing Arts – Dance) both from University of Malaya. He is currently a dance lecturer at the Faculty of Music and Performing Arts, UPSI. Prior to this, He teaches Malay traditional dance at the Dance Department, University of Malaya. He is also an award-winning choreographer in local and international dance competitions. He teaches Malay Traditional Dance, Malaysian ethnic Dance, Malay Classical Dance, Malay Nusantara Dance, Dance Drama, Anthropology of Dance, Dance Production.

Ananda Sharma A/L Subbas Chandra

I’m 36 now and I started learning Indian classical dance at the age of 5 and completed my diploma in Indian classical dance in 2016. Currently, I’m still learning and also teaching Indian classical, contemporary and modern dance in Kuala Lumpur and also exploring other forms of dance.

Andrew Igai Jamu

Andrew Igai Jamu is originating from Sarawak, graduated in Bachelor of Performing Arts (Dance) from the University of Malaya. Since he began his study in 2013, he has had a deep interest in the traditional and contemporary dance choreographies and research. He has collaborated with local and international choreographers. His choreographies have premiered in local and international festivals such as the Philippines, Thailand, Taiwan and Indonesia. Andrew was working with Nusantara Performing Arts Research Center under Prof Dr. Mohd Anis Md Nor from 2016 until 2019. Currently, he is pursuing his study in the Master of Performing Arts (Dance) under the supervision of Dr. Premalatha Thiagarajan at the University of Malaya.

Aman Yap

Aman Yap is the founder, Artistic Director and Principal Dancer of Dua Space Dance Theatre. Yap received the Hong Kong Duchess of Kent Scholarship in 1993. In 1995, he graduated from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts
with a major in dance. Yap was an Ex-professional dancer of Hong Kong City Contemporary Dance Company and Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company and GGD Dance Company in New York, USA. He toured 25 countries and 62 cities around the world and was selected as one of the Ten Most Outstanding Male
Choreographers in Malaysia by Istana Budaya in 2003. His dance piece Leave Me Alone won “The Best Choreographer Award” and “The Best Set Design Award” in the 3rd BOH Cameronian Arts Awards in 2003 and was selected as Prestige 3rd Anniversary edition “The Best Dance Talent” in 2018. Yap was invited by Theatre Du Pif from Hong Kong as guest artist to perform in Dance Me to the End of Love in Hong Kong, Singapore, China, Germany and Columbia. His excellent performances in numerous major productions won great compliments such as Hang Li Po, The Legend of Hou Yi and Chang Er, Anak Malaysia and The Story of Lim Lian Geok. Aman Yap was the principal dancer in his major works including Black & White @ Variation, Two, Ancient Inscriptions, Den and The Tree.

Anthony Meh

Anthony Meh is the founder and Managing Director of Dua Space Dance Theatre and Artistic Director of Shuang Fu Performing Arts Troupe under Shuang Fu Disabled Independent Living Association. Meh graduated from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts major in dance. He was an Ex-professional dancer in Taiwan Cloud Gate Dance Theatre, Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company and GGD Dance Company in New York, USA. He was selected as one of the best dancers and choreographers by the dance critiques of the USA, China and Singapore. Meh is a certified member of UNESCO International Dance Council since 2005. He received numerous awards and recognitions, including: “Most Distinguished Young Artist Award” in 2003, “The Outstanding Young Malaysian Award” in 2008, “The Asia-Pacific Cultural Industry Creativeness Golden Award” in 2009, “The Cultural Character of the Year” by Global Golden Brand Awards in 2010, “World Chinese Model 2011” from World Chinese Venture Model Association and “The Best Dance Talent” by the Prestige magazine in its 3rd Anniversary edition in 2018.“Extinguished Alumni Award of Foon Yew High School” in 2019.

Chan Kar Kah

Kar Kah is an interdisciplinary artist, choreographer, and instructor. Studied bachelor’s degree in Dance under Beijing Normal University, majoring in Chinese and contemporary dance, her research delves into the affects of Malaysian culture on traditional Chinese dances in Malaysia. Kar Kah founded Marrow Collective that explores the interstices of dance and visual arts in 2018. She has instructed and choreographed for dance companies, including Han Fong Dance Ensemble, Noir Dance Theatre and WuXu Dance Troupe. Over the years her works have toured in China, Taiwan, Singapore, Indonesia and Hong Kong. Her recent works are presented in Dancebox 2018-2020 , Dancing in Place 2019, MAPFest 2019-2020 and Bandung International Arts Festival 2020.

Chew Kai Min

Adeline Chew graduated from the University of Malaya with a Bachelor’s Degree in Performing Arts, majoring in Dance with First Class Honor. Trained from a young age in Ballroom Dancing, she has won several awards in local and international Latin and Ballroom Dancing championships. In 2017, She obtained her Associate in the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing Modern Theatre.

Chew Sie Theng

From Seremban, Negeri Sembilan. Started dance at the age of 13 in Chinese classical dance and ballet. Graduate degree student from ASWARA class 2014 major in choreography. Completed her Arangetram, a Bharatanatyam solo debut trained and choreographed by Sri Shankar Kandasamy. Latest Bharatanatyam performance was with ASK Dance Company Crossing Borders held in Istana Budaya. Currently teaching contemporary dance, Chinese classical dance at Gala Classical Dance in Seremban.

Chia Kai Xian

Chia Kai Xian is the Artistic Director of Ximply Dance Company and the founder of Ximply Arts Festival in Alor Setar, Malaysia. He graduated with 1st class honor in a degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts (Dance) from the Chinese Culture University in Taiwan. He is also graduated with a Master in dance from the Universiti Malaya, Malaysia. He is an established dancer/choreographer and has vast experience participating in various local and international events. Some of his achievements are Champion of the Malaysia-Chinese Dance Competition (Open Group) in 2016, 2017, and 2018, The Best Choreographer in 2017, The Best Artist Contribution Award received at the 36th Malaysia Chinese Culture Festival in 2019, and selected as one of the TOP 5 Choreographers for Hong Kong Bauhinia International Dance Competition held in 2016 & 2018. He was also invited as a panelist and a performer at dance festivals organized in China, Japan, Greece, and Russia.

Chia Yan Wei 

Fione Chia, graduated from ASWARA with a Bachelor of Dance (Honours) in Choreography, where she was exposed to traditional Chinese, Malay, Indian, and contemporary dance. She has participated in many dance performances, festivals and competitions such as Dance Box (MyDanc Alliance), MPO Seni Ensemble, Gerak, International Dance Day, Take off (Penang Performing Arts Centre), Release 3.0 (Maya Dance Theatre, Singapore) and Guangdong Modern Dance Festival (Guangzhou, China) . Her choreography “Jin Zhu Long” was nominated for the Top 18 in the 7th No Ballet International Choreography Competition in Germany. Fione is currently a dance artist of Kwang Tung Dance Company, as well as founded New Gen D Studio.

Choong Wan Chin

Choong Wan Chin, Malaysian, is Founder and Artistic Director of KL Dance Works and Ballet Theatre Malaysia. A graduate of the Shanghai Dance School, she has danced with the Singapore Dance Theatre and Shanghai Ballet Company. Upon receiving her Master Degree of Fine Arts in Dance and Integrated Media at California Institute of the Arts, USA, she joined Ena Ballet Studio, Japan as Resident Choreographer and Principal teacher and co-founded Ena Ballet Studio Company. Since 2010, Wan Chin has staged 10 major productions, full-length ballet repertoires and International Ballet Galas at the Istana Budaya Kuala Lumpur and in 2015 collaborated with the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra in creating Carmen in Dance and Paquita Grand pas Classic. Wan Chin has been invited to guest teach and present her choreographies in USA, Japan, Colombia, Thailand and Singapore.

Dalila Binti Abdul Samad

My name is Dalila and I am a Bachelor In Arts graduate from ASWARA and also worked in ASK Dance Company for five years. I train in various types of genre which includes Traditional Malay dance, Bharatanatyam, Contemporary, and Ballet. I am currently the founder of DS Dance Company. My highest achievements include choreographing for Dato’ Siti Nurhaliza Concert On Tour and represented Malaysia to Korea under Asia Culture Centre (2018,2019). I love experimenting with traditional and contemporary dance in my work and I am also passionate about teaching dance and nurturing dancers to their fullest potential.

Dhanya Sree Sasikumar begun learning this Bharatha Natyam at the age of 3. She completed her Bharatha Natyam Arrangetram in 2012, has performed widely all over Malaysia and India under various prestigious banners. Douglas Philip Labadin

Douglas Philip Labadin is a Sabahan dancer and choreographer who graduated from Akademi Seni Budaya dan Warisan Kebangsaan (ASWARA) with a Diploma in Dance and Bachelor of Dance with Hons. (Performance). During his studies, he was awarded the Best Graduate of the Faculty of Dance and has also received the Dean’s List award multiple times. In 2017, he was awarded the Best Supporting Male Dancer in Short+Sweet Dance. As a choreographer, he likes to draw inspiration from current events, be it personal occurrences or the ‘trending’ piece of news at that time, and also natural elements that can be found in his surrounding. Goh Jou Zhi

Started dancing since 4-year-old, Joise is now a Diploma In Dance holder from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts Singapore (NAFA), and Degree In Dance (choreography) from Akademi Seni Budaya dan Warisan Kebangsaan (Aswara). Throughout the journey, she has learned several Western and Eastern dance forms and has joined various dance performances and back-staging projects with several roles in both Malaysia and Singapore. I’m basically a Bharatanatyam dancer. Trained at KALASHETRA, Chennai. Did my diploma in dance. Then I joined Dato Ramli Ibrahim at Sutra Dance Theatre. With him, I dif my modern and my ballet training. I was his assistance artistic director working for Sutra for almost 38 years. Now I am a freelancer. I am also a Fashion desiģner. I do more designs for costume. I was worked with many actors as teaching them dance movements. I did many solo and group chreography. I am also a prop and stage-set designer. Hii Ing Fung

A freelance dancer, choreographer and dance educator, sometimes a production committee or backstage member; a Sarawakian who based in KL-Selangor and actives in diverse dance events across borders. She was the recipient of Best New Talent (Female) at Short+Sweet Dance Malaysia (2009), and graduate from University of Malaya’s Master of Performing Arts (Dance) programme (2014). She founded Dance Body Project (2012) and Lief In Dance Centre (2020) with aims to bridge and promote collaboration between various dance bodies and the community, so as to enhance education through performing arts. Her recent projects include [Dancing Forward: A Roundtable For Dance]; dance documentation – the dance history collection on Hua Zu Wu and Malaysian ballet; and so on.

Joseph Gonzales

Professor at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts since 2016, and Dean of Dance National Arts Academy, Malaysia (1998-2015). He has performed/choreographed professionally in multiple genres since 1981 including the UK National Tour/West End The King and I, Kuala Lumpur Dance Theatre and St. Moritz Gold Band in Malaysia. He researches Malaysian dance, choreographer-educator, former Co-Chair of Asian Dance Committee; President of MyDance Alliance; SEA Vice President for World Dance Alliance Asia Pacific. Founder/Artistic Director of ASK Dance Company (est. 2011). Uses dance as a bridge towards inter-cultural understanding, a response to contemporary issues, and works for greater international presence for Malaysia.

Kenny Shim

Kenny Shim, choreographer and dance artiste based in Malaysia, has worked with choreographers and companies in the U.K. and Europe. Trained in both London Contemporary Dance School and Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, Kenny produced and choreographed his debut production: Triple Bill of Contemporary Dance Works in 2018. He has then crafted over 10 original choreographies for schools, companies and soloist both abroad and locally. He is the commissioned choreographer for the 15th & 16th Boh Arts Awards. He has also been appointed an Advisory Board Member of the Canna Dance, an international dance competition, fostering new talents and providing industry network to you dancers internationally.

Lau Beh Chin 

Lau Beh Chin (Jinn) is from Penang, Malaysia. She qualified with a degree in chemical engineering. In 2011, she spent a year in Master of Choreography at Fontys Hogeshcool Voor de Kunsten, Tilburg before she awarded stepping stone scholarship. She moved to Ireland and graduated from the University of Limerick at the following year with a first class honors Master’s degree in Contemporary dance performance. By the way, she was invited to perform at FAKI’19, Croatia, World Dance Alliance-Asia Pacific 2016 in Korea and M1 Contact Festival 2017.

Lavanya a/p Selvaratnam

Lavanya Selvaratnam currently is a Senior Lecturer & the Founder of LS Creation is a trained dancer/choreographer/teacher with more than 20 years experience in the dance industry. She has obtained her Certificate in Dance Therapy (theory) from School Of Dance Therapy London, completed her graduation in Bharathanatyam and done her Yoga Instructorship Certification affliliated by Atmayaan Yoga Academy, India. Lawrence Suari Mutu 

Angika Fine Arts – AFA tge brain child of NrutyaCharya Lawrence Sackris based in Malaysia City Kuala Lumpur. Leang Hui Jie

Jet Leang is the artistic director of Jet Leang Dance Theatre born and raised in Penang, Malaysia. He started his training when he’s 15 with breakdancing and hip-hop. He went to Nanyang Academy of Fine Art(NAFA) in the year of 2010 as class of 2013. In 2012, he did choreograph for Chingay 2012(Singapore) titled “ Triumph Over Challenges”. In 2013, his choreography “ The past that can never be again” won the gold medal at Asia Youth festival 2013 in Hong Kong. In 2015, He did his choreography research in The Netherlands. In 2016, he choreographed “Nutcracker” in Gateway Entertainment, Singapore. In 2018, He also assisting aThai choreographer Pichet Klunchun to complete the opening choreography “MI(X)G” for Festival Tokyo.

Lee Ren Xin

I completed my BFA (Dance) at the Purchase Conservatory of Dance, State University of New York, after graduating from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, Singapore. Trained with LeeSaar The Company, NYC, and T.H.E. Dance Company, Singapore, and choreographed for T.H.E. Second Company over 2008-2014. I danced with DPAC Dance Company in Malaysia, performed ‘SK!N’ by Terryandthecuz, touring Adelaide and Melbourne. My past creations include Because Everybody Dreams (B.E.D.) 2014-2016 and the Speficifisfety series 2017-2018, collaborating with Singapore artist Lee Mun Wai. My works presented at Festival/Tokyo, Tokyo Performing Arts Meeting, Singapore da:ns festival, M1 Contact, Surakarta, Hong Kong, Seoul. I work with dancers and non-dancers in my choreography, specific to site. Each body connecting to its own wisdom and pleasure is important to me. I’m currently a member of Five Arts Centre.

Len Siew Mee

Artistic director of Kwang Tung Dance Company. She has not received professional dance training but her unique style and approach to choreography is widely admired. Her choreographies have made appearances in art festival such as TARI Festival, Malaysia Dance Festival, ASIA Dance Festival 2006 (Japan), Guangdong Modern Dance Festival 2009, 2010 & 2018, Goyang International Dance Festival 2016 (Korea). She won the Best Performer (Dance) award in the 4th Annual BOH Cameronian Arts Awards 2005 and was nominated in the Rolex Mentor and Protege Arts Initiative (Dance) 2012/2013.

Leng Poh Gee

He holds a Master of Arts (Performing Arts) from University of Malaya and Bachelor of Science (Human Development) from Universiti Putra Malaysia. He was a formal head of department and formal lecturer of Dance Department, University of Malaya. He has nominated as The Best Choreographer (Musical Category) for BOH Cameronian Arts Awards on 2013 and 2015. He is currently a dance lecturer of Sultan Idris Education University; the committee of My Dance Alliance; dance notation facilitator to the Johor Heritage Foundation, and one of the editors cum translator of LANGKAH, a bilingual online journal for local contemporary dance.

Lim Kit Yin

Kylie Lim was exposed to the art of dancing from the age of six at Grace School of Dancing, Ipoh; pursuing comprehensive syllabus and methodology by Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing (ISTD) based in London, United Kingdom. With her burning passion in the art of classical ballet, she pursued and was enrolled as a qualified Associate of Imperial Classical Ballet by the aforesaid distinguished institution in 2008. She has been teaching since then wherein her teaching experiences have been wide-ranging from engaging with different students from varying demographic settings in terms of age, level of qualifications and background of dancing. Low Chong Kiat

Low Chong Kiat (Lu ZhongJieck), a Chinese Dance based freelance dancer, choreographer, instructor. He’s trained by Mr. Zhou Guixin from Ellie Zhou Ballet Studio and Mr. Justin Wong from KL Han Fong Dance Ensemble. In year 2015, Low also careered as a full-time dancer with Dua Space Dance Theatre. With experience and knowledge gained through the years, allow him to continue and complete his dance education at Huaqiao University and awarded scholarship for studying in NUA, graduated with a Master’s degree of M.A in Dance. Lu Wit Chin

Lu started his first ballet lesson in Federal Academy of Ballet at the age of 21. Lu has completed his Advance 2 RAD syllabus and granted his certification of the Diploma in Dance Studies from Royal Academy of Dance. Lu was the second runner-up in the Malaysia TDS ballet solo competition, was awarded the EBS Award to study ballet in Japan, and the Sansha – Modern Dance award. In 2010, His work <L’etranger> was invited to perform in Busan International Arts Market, and work with Korea local artists has performed in Seoul International Arts Festival. His work <Something Shifted> jointly choreographed with Singapore artist, Christina Chan has won the most promising work for emerging choreographer in the Sprouts Singapore. In 2012, Lu staged his full-length solo performance and also featured in the Canon 650D camera TVC starred with Hong Kong famous actor Simon Yam Tat Wah.

Mak Foong Ming

Graduated with a master of physical education at the University Putra Malaysia and hold a diploma in contemporary dance teacher’s course from the National Association of Teachers of Dancing, England. She joined Kwang Tung Dance Company in 2005 and has performed locally and internationally, such as in Germany, Singapore, and China. Her works were nominated for the Best Choreographer and Best Group Performance in the BOH Cameronian Arts Awards. Megan Chng

Megan is a bilingual actor, choreographer and educator from Malaysia. Trained in New York and Singapore, Megan has performed both on stage and screen throughout the South East Asian region. Mohamed Na’im Syah Razad b Mohd Zin

Naim Syahrazad was born in Kuala Lumpur. He completed his Diploma in Dance in 2010, and then Bachelor of Dance (Choreography) Honours at ASWARA in 2013. Has been working with ASK Dance company from 2011 till 2020. He was part of Aswara Dance Company that represented Malaysia at the World Championship of Performing Arts 2010 in Los Angeles, winning five gold medals and the tittle of World Champions. He won the Best Male dancer at KLPAC’s Short+Sweet Dance in 2009 and 2011. He was named one of Best New Comer in 2013 by Tanz Magazines by international dance critics. Naim won Best Featured Performer at the Boh Cameronian Arts Awards in 2015. In 2017, He was a Master Choreographer for Opening SEA Games 2017 and Choreographer for Dato Siti Nurhaliza on Tour 2019

Mohammad Khairi Bin Mokthar

Mohammad Khairi Mokthar, currently is a Lecturer at Dance Department, Faculty of Creative Arts, Universiti Malaya. He graduated with Master of Fine Arts in Dance Performance (majoring contemporary dance) in Korea National University of Arts, Korea. He completed his Diploma in Dance in 2010 and Bachelor of Dance (Performance) in 2013. In 2013, he formally qualified as Indian classical dancer through his debut in Bharatanatyam Arangetram. He works in England at Shobana Jeyasingh Dance in 2012 and 2013. He was a principal dancer in ASK Dance Company and Inner Space Dance TFA. In 2015 he won Best Choreographer in Full-length Work in 12th BOH Cameronian Arts Awards Malaysia and received The Shining Star Awards organised by Uniques Arts Culture and Heritage Foundation with the collaboration of Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture Malaysia in 2019.

Mohd Fauzi Bin Amirudin

Fauzi Amirudin is currently an Independent artist, dancer/choreographer in Malaysia. He graduate from ASWARA (2013) and a former choreographer and dancer at Ask Dance Company. His achievement won 3 gold medals at the World Championship of Performing Arts (WCOPA) in Los Angeles in 2012. In 2013, He won the BOH Cameronian Arts Award for “Best Choreographer” in a mixed bill for his work “2 by 2” produced by Ask Dance Company. Mohd Nurulazmie Bin Zanal Abdden 

Azmie’s interest in dance began at the age of 21 and he pursued his studies at National Academy of Arts, Culture, & Heritage (ASWARA). Trained in Malay martial arts, Silat, he often uses the elements in most of his work and choreographies. He has danced and acted in many productions both locally and abroad. Muhamad Zakwan Hafizie bin Zakaria

Muhamad Zakwan Hafizie bin Zakaria who also known as Izzie Islam, a graduate of Bachelors Degree in Dance in ASWARA and also a graduate of Diploma in Theatre from Faculty of Film, Theatre and Animation UiTM. Significantly, he was the choreographer for Musical Theatre Dato Onn in Auditorium Shah Alam 2015, Musical Theatre Remy in JKKN Perak 2017, as choreographer in Dance Competition K12 Zafest 2017 Universiti Putra Malaysia, as choreographer in Malaysian Floor Pattern Sport Dance Competition Istana Budaya 2017, as choreographer in Festival Zapin Terbuka Belia Malaysia 2018. Muhammad Bin Samsudin

Ng Xinying, currently a full-time lecturer under the Faculty of Dance in National Academy of Arts, Culture and Heritage (ASWARA). Graduated with a Master of Fine Arts in Dance Performance (contemporary major) in Korea National University of Arts under full scholarship offered by the Korean government, Xinying also debuted as an Indian classical dancer in Bharatanatyam Arangetram in 2013. Xinying has earned several awards which include Top 10 New Generation Malaysian Cultural Dancers (2017), 1st Prize in Talent Competition (Dance) in Hankuk University of Foreign Studies (2014), 2nd prize in Seoul International Dance Competition (2015 and 2016) and Best Female Dancer in Short+Sweet Dance Festival (2011). Nurulakmal Binti Abdul Wahid

Nurulakmal Abdul Wahid holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree from the University Malaya. She is trained with various dance genres, mainly Malay and Sarawak traditional dances and modern and contemporary. She has actively presented and published her research on Begendang Sarawak (Sarawak Malay traditional performing arts) locally and internationally since 2013. She also has performed and choreographed some site-specific dance works at Dancing in Place, George Town Festival, and Butterworth Fringe Festival, which informs her current Ph.D. research topic. Ong Jee Teng

Ong Jee Teng (GG) graduated from ASWARA and UKM, majoring in Dance and TESL respectively. She started learning cultural dances since she was 16 years old under Program Bimbingan Seni Budaya managed by JKKN. She then joined Pusat Kebudayaan UKM and ASWARA which shaped her into a well-rounded multiracial dancer, performed locally and internationally. She has produced a few solo and ensemble works, in the form of dance showcase and dance film, such as “Sooner or Later”, “i-Rama”, “Statement”, “En Mi Cuarto”, “Longing” and “Flower Blooming”. Rathimalar A/P M.Govindarajoo 

Rathimalar Govindarajoo (Rathi) specialises in Indian Classical Odissi, Bharata Natyam and Modern Contemporary dance. She spent her formative years with Sutra Dance Theatre for almost three decades now (since 1989), and presently continues to teach and perform with Sutra Foundation. Rathi is one of Shobana Jeyasingh Dance (SJDC)’s pioneer dancers who were employed full-time for five years (2001-2006) in London UK. Rathi is currently a permanent staff as a Performing Arts Education Specialist in Stella Maris International School (2020 to present), and she continues to freelance & contribute her extensive dance experience towards the performing arts and education in Malaysia and abroad.

Raymond Liew Jin Pin

Studied at ASWARA and both BA/MA in Choreography at Folkwang University in Germany. Selected as residency artist at K3 Tanzplan Hamburg for season 2019/2020, dealt with the relationship between traditional dance and contemporary dance. Raymond was a guest dancer with Pina Bausch Tanztheater Wuppertal in ‘Rites of Spring’, also have worked with Nature Theater of Oklahoma, Theater Bremen, Jerome Bél, Henrietta Horn, Ben Riepe, Samir Akika, Folkwang Tanz Studio. ‘Dear Raymond’ is about his survival in a tragic speedboat accident in Pulau Tioman in 2013. ‘The Edge’ was invited at d’motion Festival in Malaysia and PRISMA Festival of Panama. ‘Cut the Clouds’ and ‘Tongue’ won several awards at the 12th and 16th BOH Awards. Since 2016, he has worked together with German artist Jascha Viehstädt. His next creation is using Maria Cencaru as a persona to discuss the topic of LGBTQ+ in Malaysia.

Raziman Bin Sarbini

Dancer/choreographer, Raziman Sarbini is Kedayan by ethnicity from Sarawak. In 2013, he completed his Diploma in Dance and he graduated with a Bachelors in Dance (Performance) Honours in 2015 both from the National Academy of Arts, Culture and Heritage (ASWARA) Malaysia. He worked with ASK Dance company for several years. He been working with leading choreographers of Malaysia and also participated in several international projects performing from USA to Korea. In 2019 he graduated with MFA in Dance at NYU Tisch School of the Arts with a full scholarship from Tunku Abdul Rahman Foundation of Sarawak. Upon graduation, he worked on the Kung-Fu musical “Dragon Spring Phoenix Rise” choreographed by Akram Khan staged at The Shed, New York City “Father of the Nation” in Bangladesh for the Akrakhan Company 2020.

Rithaudin Bin Abd Kadir

Rithaudin hails from Sabah and holding a degree in Performing Arts (Dance) from University of Malaya, using dance as a tool to express a universal message and to make his work as edu-tainment which depict current issues and awareness.With a strong traditional dance background, his ventures in experimental and site- specific works, a coalition of western contemporary vocabulary fused with traditional movement philosophy is well-known. Rithaudin believes dance to be a cultural imprint on the body. Thus, any dance is a living proof of the culture of the beholder. He began his experiment mixing that traditional and his work is recognized in the local and international dance scene, particularly in site specific work.

Syamsudin Bin Noh

Syamsudin Bin Noh – otherwise known as Sharm Noh – hails from the town of Shah Alam. He kicked off his career as a dancer at the age of 18, Sharm started to choreograph and since then he’s been actively creating different works. Besides choreographing dance pieces he is also active in the acrobatics scene. He coached for kickstart gymnastic company and joined Psycusix as a choreographer. Now, he pursue his study at Universiti Malaya Bachelor in dance.

Tan Bee Hung

LLB graduate. Currently pursuing Master of Dance at University of Malaya. Predominantly trained in contemporary dance. Active in the local and international dance scenes. Was selected to participate in the International Young Choreographer Program in Kaohsiung, Taiwan in 2013, SEA Choreolab in 2015 and Dans:Lab 2018. Constantly curious and always looking for ways to explore the connections of the body and breath, to space and time. AKA Edison, a street dancer since 2007 & start journey of choreographer since 2010. A self-learner as start-up, exploring in different genre like hip-hop, break-dance & contemporary, attach to few studio along the way and currently focus on Urban & Popping in a NPO. Performed at culture event, shopping centers event, private event, government event & wedding reception. Thingalani a/p Thiagarajan

I am a trained classical and contemporary Indian dancer. I hold a Diploma in Bharathanatyam (Indian classical dance) and been dancing and performing for the past 24 years. Joined Temple of Fine Arts in 2010 right after graduating with diploma and pursued Post Graduate lessons in Bharathanatyam. I was also teaching Bollywood lessons in Anytime Fitness (Sunway Geo) between 2018-2019. I have performed in various stage shows over these years. Formed my own dance school under the name of Kalatara Arts Academy in 2020. I have 20 students learning under me currently and looking to continue growing the dance school and produce dance productions in the near future. I am currently experimenting short dance films as another form of storytelling.

Wong Jyh Shyong

Wong Jyh Shyong (JS) received his Master of Fine Arts from Graduate Institute of Choreography, Taipei National University of the Arts in 2013 and Bachelor of Fine Arts from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts with First Class Honours in 2005. He was previously a dancer with Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan from 2005 to 2009. In the 9th and 11th BOH Cameronian Arts Awards in Malaysia, he received the Best Featured Performer award in 2011 and 2013. From 2013 to 2016, he was the artistic director of DPAC Dance Company as well as Damansara Performing Arts Centre. Thus far, JS has staged his own choreography and commissioned creations in various festivals and venues in Australia, Taiwan, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, India and Malaysia. He is now a dance department’s lecture of Faculty of Creative Arts, Universiti Malaya.

Zara Jayne Marimuthu

A dancer and writer, Zara Jayne lives for art through words and movements. At the age of five, she started her foundation in ballet but over the years, her dance vocabulary has evolved – exploring hip hop, dancehall and latin. She has trained in Melbourne and Urban Dance Camp in Germany. Since coming back to Malaysia in 2018, she has been in commercials and music videos such as Toyota Vios “As Never Before”, Tiger Beer’s “Uncage Your Tiger” and Zee Avi’s “Who Are U” music video. From a performer to now a teacher and choreographer, she hopes to inspire others through the message behind each work.
