The Actors Studio presents a buto workshop by Tony Yap and Yumi Umiumare.
The aim of the workshop is to discover an individual language and colour in relation to the environment – blending the outer elements into oneself to produce theatrical ingredients for the body.
Ultimately the dance becomes the expression of the body, as it finds itself and its own movement.
This is a process to return to the body, to the creative energy that inspires movement. Rather than aspiring to an aesthetic ideal, the dance attempts to expose joys and sorrows of life through the Buto Spirit, exploring the most fundamental elements of physical and psychological existence.
Both Yumi Umiumare and Tony Yap recently performed their acclaimed series How Could You Even Begin To Understand in Tokyo at the Beyond Butoh Festival 2.
