From Stage to Screen

An introduction to screen dance, a new visual language from stage to screen and an exploration of the duet between camera and movement.

About the speaker – Maurice Lai
Since 2000, Maurice has been working in video and design for various performing art companies in Hong Kong, China, Taiwan, Singapore, U.S.A., U.K. and Italy. His first independent dance video A Cup of Tea, collaborated with Yuri NG, was the award-winning video in Jumping Frames Dance Video Festival 2004 and went on to be awarded Menzioni Speciali of Il Coreografo Elettronico and XIV Festival Internazionale Di Videodanza 2006 in Napoli, Italy. From 2011 to 2012, Jumping Frames chose his 5 dance video as a program to screen in Hong Kong, Beijing, Taipei, Rome, Florence and Napoli. In 2013 and 2014, Maurice was invited by Harbor For the Arts Festival in U.S.A., as a residence artist in Experimental Film Virginia.

Maurice now is working on his Rite of City Dance Video Project. He finished the first episode : Rite of City – Reminisce. This dance film premiere in Jumping Frames International Dance Video Showcase : Taipei during Hong Kong Week 2012 in Taiwan. It was also selected by ‘Short Film Corner’ of Festival de Cannes 2013 in France, Berlin POOL Video Dance Night 2013 in Germany, Desterro International Dance Festival Desterro Video Dance Exhibition 2013 in Brazil, special screening in Asiatica Film Festival 2013 and the 16th Udine Far East Festival 2014 in Italy. Second episode : Rite of City – Present, will start to film this October in Florence, Italy. In 2015, Maurice received Hong Kong Dance Award – Outstanding Achievement in Video and Photography for Dance, by Hong Kong Dance Alliance.
